Turkic Academy and Mongolian Academy of Sciences Summarize 10 Years of Joint Archaeological Research

Today, on 5 July, an event dedicated to the 10th anniversary of cooperation between the Turkic Academy and the Institute of Archaeology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences was held at the National Museum of Chinggis Khaan in Ulaanbaatar.

The anniversary programme highlighted a decade of joint scientific work between the two institutions in the field of archaeological research and the study of the ancient Turkic heritage. A photo exhibition and a photo album were presented as part of the event, summarizing the results of joint expeditions and fieldwork conducted within the framework of this partnership.

The event was attended by the Vice Presidents of the Turkic Academy Askhat Kessikbayev and Bülent Bayram, as well as prominent representatives of the scientific community of Mongolia and the Turkic world, including President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences Prof. Dr. Sodnomsambuu Demberel, Director of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, Prof. Dr. Sampildondov Chuluun, Director of the Institute of Archaeology, Dr. Gelegdorj Eregzen, Ambassador of Hungary to Mongolia Borbála Obrusánszky, and Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Mongolia Nurlan Okauly.

During the conference, participants discussed the results of long-term projects and their contribution to the study and preservation of the region’s archaeological heritage. Particular attention was paid to the outcomes of long-standing joint archaeological research in the Nomgon Valley, which has been conducted since 2019 by the Turkic Academy together with the Institute of Archaeology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Over this period, the expeditions have uncovered a number of unique findings, including fragments of stone steles with Old Turkic, Sogdian, and Chinese inscriptions, providing new insights into the early medieval history of Turkic states and refining scholarly understanding of the Nomgon-2 complex.

Over the past ten years, cooperation between the Turkic Academy and the Institute of Archaeology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences has become one of the most sustainable international scientific partnerships in the region.
