Today, September 17, President of the Turkic Academy, Prof. Dr. Shahin Mustafayev took part in the international symposium “Anatolia and the Islamic World in the Mongol Era: A Century of Great Events, Great Personalities and Great Transformations,” held in Konya, Türkiye.
The symposium was organized by the Institute of Seljuk Studies at Selçuk University in cooperation with the Turkic Academy, with the participation of leading academic and research organizations.
The opening ceremony was attended by heads of leading academic and research institutions in Türkiye, representatives of government bodies, and local authorities.
The symposium is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the Mongol era as one of the key transformative periods in the history of medieval Anatolia, Central Asia and the Islamic world.
Speaking at the opening session, Shahin Mustafayev emphasized the importance of the Mongol era for understanding the shared history of the Turkic peoples and highlighted the need for a comprehensive scholarly approach to its study.
“The Mongol period should not be viewed solely as an era of destruction and decline, but neither is it sufficient to regard it simply as a natural continuation of the Turkic tradition of statehood. Our main task is to study this period from multiple perspectives, drawing on primary sources, comparative research and contemporary methods of historical scholarship,” the Academy President noted.
The academic programme will continue through September 19 and will address a wide range of issues related to the political, social and cultural transformations of the period, as well as its impact on the subsequent development of the region.
