Today, September 9, the 14th International Symposium of Altay Communities, titled “The Past, Present and Future of Altay Studies,” opened in Baku. The symposium is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress.
The international scientific forum is organized by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), with the support of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the Turkic Academy, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), the Turkish Historical Society, and other academic and research institutions. More than 100 scholars from 15 countries, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, and Japan, are taking part in the symposium.
The opening ceremony was attended by President of the Turkic Academy, Prof. Dr. Shahin Mustafayev.
In his address, President of the Academy emphasized that the significance of Altay for the Turkic World lies primarily in its role as a key region for studying the history and languages of Turkic peoples, as well as early cultural processes across Eurasia. He noted that the study of Altay requires a comparative and interdisciplinary approach that takes into account scholarly data and research traditions from different countries.
“This scholarly perspective is also reflected in the work of the Turkic Academy, which studies the history, languages, literature, and culture of Turkic peoples while promoting international cooperation and interdisciplinary research into the common heritage of the Turkic World,” Mustafayev said.
The symposium features thematic sessions and panel discussions addressing various aspects of Altay Studies, the history of Eurasia, and cultural interaction among its peoples. The forum will continue through September 12, bringing together scholars to discuss the past, present, and future of Altay Studies.
